Yoruba Talking Drummers and Percussionists Worldwide – A Micro Grant and Community Empowerment Program

YOTALKPWW is one of Kara-Kata Afrobeat Society’s programs that aims to support and empower young men and women in West Africa. The program offers micro grants to young people in the Yoruba Tribe of West Africa and around the globe. Our micro grants go towards these musicians and craftspeople to assist them in their music and craft. The grants aid to get their businesses off the ground as musicians and drum makers. Successful recipients of our micro grant program are expected to report to our organization as to their progress and also to mentor others in their craft. This is a pay-it-forward program.

In addition to the grant program, we have created a vast online community with a private Facebook group where participants can stay in touch, share resources and successes. This group is also to help promote the musicians and craftspeople and to assist each other to book events and share economic and educational opportunities. This group has over 7,000 participants with more joining every day. This group is thought of as a big worldwide family, supporting and uplifting each other, with the knowledge that everyone can be successful with the right tools and access to opportunities.

Meet some of our program participants

This program is near and dear to the heart of our founder, Toyin Kayo-Ajayi, who grew up in a similar underprivileged community in Nigeria as many of our participants. It is a true gift to be able to give back and uplift others who may not have the opportunity otherwise.

Overtime, our goal is to expand the program and import our grant recipients’ handmade drums to Canada for fair-trade sales. Additionally, we are at the initial stages of planning the Yoruba Talking Drummers and Percussionists Worldwide Expo, a festival where our participants can gather to meet, share their talents on stage as well as offer skill share workshops and networking opportunities.
